Somatic Experiencing

is a body-oriented therapeutic approach to healing trauma. Drawing attention to sensory experience, the practitioner acts as a guide to uncovering where the nervous system may be stuck in fight, flight or freeze mode, due to past traumatic experiences. Through their renegotiation, an individual is guided through a process of re-patterning and releasing stored self-protective responses.

Whenever we have emotional responses that are inappropriate to what's happening in the present, they are likely being triggered by a past experience and the result of trauma. These survival responses may manifest as varying degrees of anger (fight), anxiety (flight) or numbness (freeze).

Unlike many types of therapy which provide explanations of unwanted emotional impulses and methods to cope with them, Somatic Experiencing works to change or heal the impulses altogether. Because trauma does not stem from the cognitive mind, we must work deeper within the nervous system to heal its effects.

In practice, Somatic Experiencing sessions may look like slowed-down talk therapy with attention given to the body. My practice of this methodology is based on the belief that the mind is not separate from the body, and every body is wildly intelligent, possessing the ability to heal and regulate itself under the right conditions.

Erin Desmond

is an artist, activist and practitioner who works to create greater connection within and between nervous systems. She studied art and performance at UCLA and Yale and trauma healing therapy at the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. She practices Somatic Experiencing in one-on-one settings to facilitate healing within individuals. Her research and observation around of trauma healing, nervous system function, holistic healing, nutrition and physiologic birth are woven into experiences she creates that exist as physical art work and/or interactions between humans.

Sessions

Somatic Experiencing sessions are 50 minutes to 1 hour long.

The cost of a session is $100  /  or package of 4 sessions for $350.

I also offer wellness consultations where we asses diet and lifestyle habits and develop a plan of action to increase physical health. The cost of this 1 hr session with individualized plan + 30 minute follow up is $150.

I believe that healing should be accessible to all, so I offer a sliding scale to anyone in need, on a case-by-case basis.
