I support the movement and resolution of trauma by guiding the nervous system through constriction to expansion.
In order to heal and expand the body/mind/spirit, we must allow movement from the inside out. Healing is the movement of stuck thoughts, emotions, patterns, sensations, energy, neurons, cells, circulation, digestion. When we understand that instead of inhibiting, we must move through, we expand to new dimensions of aliveness.
Somatic Experiencing is a gentle method of healing trauma that combines physiology, psychology, ethology and indigenous healing practices. It uses sensory experience as a guide to resetting the autonomic nervous system, creating the natural ability to deactivate from fight or flight responses (anxiety, anger) and to emerge from freeze responses (numbness). Past traumas, or overwhelming experiences, are revisited, giving the nervous system the opportunity to renegotiate self-protective responses that were left incomplete.
Everyone experiences some amount of trauma. During a traumatic experience, fight, flight and freeze responses are stored in the brain/body, creating involuntary anxiety, fear, frustration, anger, numbness and disconnection, which don’t serve a person in their present. (In severe cases, this is known as PTSD.) In sessions we work at a person’s own pace and within their comfort zone to facilitate natural movement and resolution of traumas, both large and small. While traditional therapy focuses on understanding and recognizing impulses in order to control behavior, Somatic Experiencing works with the body-mind to renegotiate and change impulses.
One-on-one sessions use minimal speaking with attention to bodily sensations. I believe that healing should be a available to all, regardless of financial situation, and work to make this a reality.
