Art moves and shakes and vulnerably demands a renegotiation. Artists have the opportunity to renegotiate something inside of themselves in everything they make. If the renegotiation is real, a viewer or participant can’t help but re-experience it inside their own body as they gaze or touch or speak or shout or weep. This experience is new every time, intimate, unique and complex, yet clear like a thumb print under a magnifying glass with light shining through. Art creates a shift in capacity to sense, understand, emote, empathize, believe, see through lies, connect, reciprocate, speak out, protect, energize. Art liberates blocked emotions, memories, thoughts, self-protective responses: fight and flight. Art evokes a deeper sensing, past the skin, down through muscle, blood, organs, veins, bones. Anxiety and anger move and reach resolution, instead of lingering, trapped in the body, ready to pounce at the slightest trigger. Inhibited impulses flow and transform until they’ve reached calm sureness, ready for what happens next. Status quo states are renegotiated until interior movement gains so much velocity, it has no choice but to pour out into the exterior, overflowing like a spring welling up from the earth. Art starts movement. This is an art movement. Every work of art starts a movement in the nervous system of every body who experiences it. No movement that’s started stops, though it may change form with each new renegotiation. Vulnerability is understood as entry-point for movement into faith in the unknown and open-ended; faith in completion which may take minutes, hours, days, years, but the movement must start now. Movement is understood as change is understood as renegotiation is understood as healing. Art heals. Stuck trauma is moved. Hearts are moved. Whole families are moved. Mountains are moved. Whole cities are moved. Society is moved. You are moved.
